Apropriate Development

Where development professionals share their expertise

Update

Well, working and being a mother has gotten the best of my intentions to keep this blog up to date, but I have been keeping an eye on policy and development throughout the world.

China is everywhere - so much so that I have begun Mandarin. It seems that every evening there is at least one news item on the radio or tv about China and its growth, its people, its use of internet warfare, Yahoo and multinational corporations operating in China, the rise of Chinese philanthropists - and more and more. I have read that parents are having their children learn Mandarin at a young age now. Schools are offering classes, lectures, and language programs on China. It's an exciting opportunity.

On other notes, I read an article recently on Singapore and was amazed at the conscious policy making that turned it from what could have been another struggling developing country to a country that is booming and is very modern and business oriented. The article said that old buildings, history, was destroyed and put up in place were new modern constructions and a modern ways of thinking and living.

Policy towards Pakistan is also interesting at this moment and so is US policy towards Iran of course. But all of this will have to be saved for a later post!
