Idealism, Hope, Politics

After working on a campaign when I was on college, my idealistic and young self was slightly crushed by the reality of "politics" in politics. And recently, I started thinking that maybe I have been naively idealistic all of my life, by believing in the infinite possibilities our world holds. With the recent political tragedy in Pakistan, the continued fear and hardship in every day life for the middle class in America (not to mention the poor), and poverty, disease, and violence throughout the world, I was feeling a little helpless.

Saturday, I went to see Barack Obama speak in NH. We drove a little under two hours to hear him for about 30 minutes, and it was well worth it. He doesn't have everything down perfectly. He doesn't have all of the answers. He isn't coming to make all of the right decisions. But he has more than anyone else I have met in a long time - and he reminds me of who I have always been up until recently, an idealist, a believer in the infinite possibilities of positive living. And all of a sudden, I felt like someone understood the way I have always looked at the world. I chose then not to give up my own idealism, which was closer to the brink then I wish to admit. And I chose to have hope. What he continues to preach - hope. But what I admire most, and how I have always struggled for, is his continued calmness. He doesn't get angry, and he isn't easily provoked from what I can tell so far. And so I think there are possibilities for this world. Many, many possibilities, if we give hope a chance.
