Apropriate Development

Where development professionals share their expertise

Web Development

Although my husband is a web developer, and I have my own website, I have very little understanding of any of the programming that is used to build websites. I am, though, very encouraged and impressed by the communities that come together to develop better technology. Take this site for example, a Drupal site, which uses technology that has been created by a number of web developers that have come together to create a content management system that someone like myself, who has very little understanding of web development, can use. These Drupal developers donate their own time making add-ons, making sure everything works right, getting rid of bugs, developing security measures, but they also do training sessions, conferences, and have a community listserv. And many businesses make use of this free technology by creating websites that use their content management systems. The businesses make money, but Drupal doesn't. I know there are other similar setups like Joomla and probably lots more I haven't heard of.

Again, the vocabulary I use is probably a bit off, but what I mean to say is that these web developers are truly developing appropriately. They are joining forces to create and to make something of use for everyone. By doing this together, they will come up with the best product possible and it will benefit everyone at no cost to anyone. This is truly a path that we might all do well to follow.

Drupal

I wholeheartedly agree. I have been on the internet since 1994 and I have never been as impressed with any community online than I have been with the Drupal community. I'm going to Boston in the beginning of March to spend 4 days hearing about Drupal and I'm more excited than a kid going to Disney World.

Just to show a little love to the huge drupal community, don't forget to visit Drupal.org. Anyone with an internet connection and some kind of web server can download Drupal and try it out for themselves.

And Drupal isn't just for blogs, take a look here to see just a few of the sites built on top of Drupal.
